The Sunshine Steel City

　　Panzhihua, the only city named after a flower in China, is situated in the southwest of Sichuan Province where the Yalung river merges with the Jinsha river.  Established in 1965, it is an emerging city of immigrants, covering an area of 7434km2, of which 831.5thousand mu(a Chinese unit of area) is cropland.  Under the jurisdiction of the Municipality are three districts and two counties and 78 towns.  With 36 ethnic groups, it has a total population of 1.1 million, of which 480 thousand are rural dwellers.  Lying in the Hengduan Mountain Range in the southwest Sichuan, it features a highland topography with the lowest altitude of 937m and highest of 4,195.5m.  It is an important base in west China specializing in supply of steel, vanadium and titanium products as well as energy.

　　With abundant mineral, hydro-energy and tourism resources, Panzhihua is 'exceptionally endowed by nature' as commented by Mr. Deng Xiaoping.  Furthermore, the city enjoys a favorable climate with an annual mean temperature of 20℃ and annual sunshine of 2,574 hours.  There is bright sunlight almost throughout the year and the climate is pleasant in four seasons.  There are many tourist attractions full of regional tastes such as the dissolved cavern, stone forest, waterfall, hot spring, virgin forest, highland grassland, underground lake, the world third highest dam, the steel works elaborately arranged in the same fashion like an 'ivory miniature'.
